Obituary of Matthew F. Whitmore

Addison: Matthew Franklin Whitmore, Jr., 88 of Maple St. Addison, entered into rest on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Corning Hospital in Corning, NY. Matt was born on June 5, 1925 in Addison, NY, the son of Matthew and Edith Neilson Whitmore. He was a 1943 graduate of Addison Central School, and served with distinction in the United States Marine Corps in the South Pacific during the WWII invasion of Okinawa. On July 2, 1950, Matt married Dorothy Ruth VanAuken Whitmore, who passed away on November 9 2013. Matt started his career as a lab technician at the Bath Hospital but soon transitioned to laboratory supply sales. He worked for a number of companies in that field in Warren and Pittsburgh, PA, and returned to settle in Addison and take care of his parents in 1969. A long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Addison, Matt also owned and operated a number of local businesses over the years, including a liquor store and antique emporium. Matt kept very busy for years collecting and restoring antiques, as well as activities with family and his many friends. Surviving Matt are his two sons and daughters in law, Michael and Mikelene Whitmore of Chula Vista, CA and Matthew P. and Marti Whitmore of Addison, his grandchildren, Matthew Patrick (Leia) Whitmore and Meghan Whitmore, his sister, Janet Mergler, and five nieces. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Dorothy and his sister Barbara Whitmore. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 12 from 2-4 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Addison, Church St., Addison. His funeral service will be conducted there on Sunday at 5 PM with Rev. Peter Marr officiating. Burial will be made in Addison Rural Cemetery.
