AVOCA: Richard A. Lyke, Sr., 74, of Main St. formerly of Howard, passed away Thursday (Jan. 9, 2014) at the bath V.A. following an extended illness. Richard was born July 30, 1939 in Bath, to Alvaro and Mildred (Wright) Lyke. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1961-68 and was a former milk tester for Steuben County. He was last employed at the Gunlocke Company in Wayland where he retired after 23 years of service. Richard is survived by four children: Richard A. Lyke, Jr. of Knoxville, TN., Vicki Presler of Wheeler, Kevin (Cathie) Brown of Parlin, N.J. and Brenda Welch of Belmont, his 8 grand children: Felicia, Derek and Emily Brown, Avalon and Steve Lyke, Brittany Davis, Rhett Presler and Betty Jo McCarthy. Richard is also survived by a sister Sondra (Harold) Brown and a brother Gordon (Linda) Lyke all of Howard, and also nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister Bonita Lyke. The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM Wednesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo. Funeral and committal services with military honors will take place immediately following calling hrs. at 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bath National Cemetery.
