Obituary of Theresa M. Cotter

CANISTEO: Theresa M. Cotter, 87, of Spruce St. passed away peacefully Saturday (Dec. 31, 2011) at McAuley Manor where she had resided since February of 2010. Theresa was born July 20, 1924 in West Almond, to Jacob and Mary (Schwab) Almeter. On June 26, 1946 in Angelica, she married Edward J. Cotter, who predeceased her in February of 2002. She was also predeceased by three sisters: Dolores Aman, Catherine Schutt and Cecilia Robeson as well as six brothers: Vincent, Norman, Charles, Paul, Maynard and Alfred Almeter. Theresa was a life long resident of the Canisteo Valley where she had worked as a Respiratory Therapist at St. James Mercy Hospital for twenty years before retiring in 1986. Her favorite pastime of gardening was very dear to her heart as well as being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Survivors include: three daughters, Kathleen (Craig) Taylor of Benton, KS., Mary (Duane) Howe of Hartsville and Barbara (Ronald) Martin of Canisteo, one brother: Clair Almeter of Almond, and seven grand children, 11 great grand children and several nieces and nephews. It was Theresa's request that there be no calling hours and that those who wish may attend a Mass of Christian burial Thursday at 1:00 PM at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo. Memorial contributions in Theresa Cotter's name may be made to Faith in Action, PO Box 117, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Service: Thursday Jan. 5, 2012 1:00 PM H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. 29 East Main St. Canisteo, N.Y.
