Earl E. Walrath, 98, of Updyke's Willow Ridge Care Center, Hornell, formerly of Jasper, passed away on Sunday morning, March 9, 2014 at St. James Mercy Hospital. Born on May 23, 1915 in Jasper, Earl was the son of Perry and Ida Mantle Walrath. He attended schools in Jasper and was a graduate of Jasper Central School. On October 3, 1943, he and the former Marian J. Hibbard were married in Woodhull. Marian survives. Earl retired from the Jasper Central School District Transportation Department where he was employed as chief mechanic and bus driver. Along with his family, Earl operated the family farm along with his regular work. An avid reader, Earl was a brilliant man who would read books on most any subject. He was also a master wood worker, building furniture which he loved to share with family. Earl lived a simple life, placing caring for and loving his family above all else. He is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Marian Walrath of Jasper, his sons, Richard Walrath of Jasper, Larry (Donna) Walrath of Round Rock, TX, David (Qianhua) Walrath of Senoia, Ga., Bruce Walrath of Horseheads and John (Lilibeth) Walrath of Keller, TX, his daughter, Elaine Jackson of Tallahassee, FL, his daughter in law, Darlene Walrath of Horseheads, 14 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Earl in death besides his parents was his infant son, Perry Walrath, his grandson, Brett Walrath, his great grandson, Jacob Walrath, his brothers, John Walrath and Howard Walrath and his sister, Alice Irvine. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014 at 11 AM at the United Methodist Church of Woodhull. The family will receive friends there from 10 AM. Burial will be in Woodhull Cemetery.
