Obituary of Ronald A. McCaig

Ronald A. McCaig Sr., 90, of Merring Road, Addison (Town of Rathbone), passed away suddenly on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell. Ron was born in Rathbone, NY on August 27, 1921, the son of Erwin G. and Bessie P. Crawford McCaig. He graduated from Addison High School. On August 19, 1949, Ron and the former Eva A. Williams were married in Addison. As a young man, Ron was a milk hauler and later went to work for the Town of Rathbone Highway Department where he eventually became highway superintendant. He left the town job for a position in the Steuben County Highway Department and retired from the county as shop foreman at the Cameron Mills county shop. Following his retirement from the county, Ron became employed by Davis LP Gas, and later, Steuben LP Gas in Woodhull as a propane deliveryman. Ron was very active in his community. He served on the Rathbone Town Board, Jasper Central School Board, was a lifelong member of the Hedgesville Presbyterian Church, where he served as treasurer for many years and he was a life member of the Woodhull Fire Department. Even though Ron was afflicted with polio as a child, he actively participated in league bowling, softball leagues and loved to fish. He was an avid fan of the NY Giants and Bill Elliott in NASCAR. Ron was preceded in death by his daughter and son in law, Karleen & Bob McCarthy, his brothers, Robert, William, Erwin and Donald McCaig and his sister, Mary Wood. Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Eva McCaig of Addison, his daughter, Carolyn McCaig of Addison, his sons and daughters in law, Donald & Michaeleen McCaig of Addison, Ronald & Jenny McCaig of Woodhull, Glenn McCaig of Rathbone and Dennis & Mary McCaig of Athens, Pa. He also leaves 17 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren, his sisters in law, Arda Draper and Anna May Walrath and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call on Tuesday, January 10 from 1-3 and 6-8 PM at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull. Funeral services will be held there on Wednesday at 11:00 AM with Pastor Brian Diffenbacher officiating. Burial will be in Northrup Hill Cemetery, Rathbone. Memorials in Ron's name may be made to the Hedgesville Presbyterian Church or the Northrup Hill Cemetery.
