Obituary of Josephine L. "Jo' Roe

CANISTEO/HINGHAM, MASS. Josephine L. "Jo" Roe, 103, formerly of East Main St. in Canisteo passed away peacefully Monday (March 3, 2014) at the Queen Anne Nursing Home in Hingham, Mass. Jo was born July 1, 1910 in Penn Yan to Wemple H. and Winifred C. (Hunt) Phalen. On June 25, 1938 she married Dr. Leon M. Roe, MD who predeceased her in August of 1984. She was also predeceased by two sons, John P. Roe in Vietnam in July of 1969 and Leon M. Roe II in April of 2003. She was also predeceased by two sisters: Eleanor Clark and Harriet Phalen. Jo was a graduate of Penn Yan Academy and a graduate of Buffalo Deaconess School of Nursing and was superintendent of pediatrics at Deaconess Hospital in Buffalo. She had lived in Canisteo from 1933-1965 and then moved to Clinton, N.Y. where she and her husband resided from 1965-77. From 2002-2010 she was a resident of the Grove Manor Braintree assisted living facility in Mass. and eventually moved into the Queen Anne Nursing Home, Hingham, Mass. Survivors include a daughter: Susan Roe- Gravina of Naples, Italy and a son: William Joseph (Ellen) Roe of Hingham, Mass., nephew Dr. Gerald (Patricia) Feeney of FL. 6 grand children and 8 great grand children. She is also survived by two sisters: Mary Sisson of Penn Yan and Eva Daisy Sorenson of Ithaca as well as several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from Noon- 2 Pm Saturday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo, where a funeral service will take place immediately following calling hrs. at 2:00 PM. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo.
