Obituary of James C. Potter

James C. Potter Sr., 82, of Space Road, Addison (Town of Rathbone), passed away on Monday, March 10, 2014 at Corning Hospital following a long illness. Jim was born in Geneva, NY on Sept. 28, 1931, the son of Clarence and Hazel (Campbell) Potter. On Jan. 5, 1951, Jim and the former Louise E. McNeil were married in Elkland, Pa. Louise preceded him in death on Dec. 29, 2008. Jim and Louise made their home in Elkland where he was a railroad employee as a young man and later went to work for the former Elkland Leather Company until it closed following a devastating fire. In 1974 they moved their family to Woodhull at which time Jim began a job with Corning Inc. He had worked at the Erwin Plant and Sullivan Park where he retired as a lubricator. An avid outdoorsman, Jim loved fishing, hunting, trapping and camping. He took his family on several excursions to Canada to fish and hunt. Jim was a former member of the Woodhull Fire Department and the Addison Eagles Aerie. He also had served as deputy constable for the Town of Woodhull. Besides his wife Louise, Jim was predeceased by his daughters, Tammy Jean Potter in 1965 and Marsha Tallarida on Jan. 4, 2005, his brother, Garfield Potter and his sister, Hazel Mae Woodard. Surviving is his son, James (Paula) Potter Jr. of Rathbone, his daughters, Vicky (John) Helgerson of Greenwood, Jackie Payne (Art Roy) of Woodhull, Tina Foster (Joe Trudeau) of Troupsburg and Anita Jo (Tom) Russell of Corning, 12 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, his sisters, Beatrice Moshier of Corning and Iona Krause of Painted Post, his beloved basset hound Copper, loving caregiver Bre Moore and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Friday, March 14, 2014 from noon to 2 PM at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. Jim's funeral services will follow there at 2 PM with Rev. Larry O'Dell officiating. Burial will be in Woodhull Cemetery.
