Obituary of Edgar Eugene Cornell

Edgar Eugene "Gene" Cornell, 93, of Hornell Gardens, Hornell, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2014 at Hornell Gardens where he had been a resident since 2007. Gene was born on the family farm in Jasper on December 15, 1920, the son of Edgar and Sarah Fisher Cornell. He grew up there and graduated from Jasper Central School. On July 31, 1942, Gene and the former Maude R. Ingersoll were married in Rathbone. Maude survives and is also a resident of Hornell Gardens. He and Maude operated their dairy farm together on the Highup Road in Jasper until their retirement. A great outdoorsman, Gene was an avid hunter and loved his dogs and cats and growing flowers. He was a former member of the Grange and the Dairyman's Coop. Besides his wife Maude, Gene is survived by his sons and daughters in law, Gary and Dawn Cornell of Hornell, Donald and Tanis Cornell of Dallas, TX and Patrick and Maureen Cornell of Jasper, his grandchildren, Michelle (Mark) Pogue, Jody (Todd) Palmer, Penny Wolf, Jennifer Cornell, Jay (Ginger) Cornell, Christopher (Melanie) Cornell, Paul Cornell (Dina Rienzo), Dane (Holly) Cornell and Sarabeth Cornell, great grandchildren, Torin Pogue, Payton Cornell and Dana Crow and nieces and nephews. Gene's brother, Donald Cornell preceded him in death in 2005. Friends may call on Thursday, May 8 from 6-8 PM at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. Funeral services will be conducted there on Friday at 10 AM with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Burial will be St. Mary's Churchyard Cemetery, Rexville, NY. Memorials in Gene's name are requested to either Meals on Wheels or the Hornell Area SPCA.
