Obituary of Shirley J. Hackett

Shirley J. Hackett, 84, of 43 William St., Addison, formerly of Woodhull, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at Corning Hospital. Born in Woodhull on May 4, 1930, Shirley was the daughter of the late Walter J. and Leona B. Welty Reynolds. She was raised in Woodhull and was a 1948 graduate of the Woodhull High School. On June 21, 1951, she and Leon K. Hackett were married at the First Baptist Church of Woodhull. Besides raising her family of four, Shirley had been employed in food services at the Troupsburg Central School and St. James Mercy Hospital. She and Leon also resided in other states where Leon pursued his employment as a truck driver. They had spent time in Wyoming, Florida, Arizona and Ohio. While living out west, she was also employed as a grocery clerk. They had returned to the area in recent years. Shirley loved birds, especially Cardinals. The color purple was her favorite color and usually showed up in her everyday wardrobe. Shirley is survived by her husband of nearly 63 years, Leon Hackett of Addison, her daughters and sons in law, Barb and Tom Pepper of Addison, Kathie and Dave Clark of Phelps, NY and Sandy and Mick Berry of Pueblo, CO, her son, Steven Hackett, grandchildren, Amy (Jason) Stevens, Joe (Melissa) Berry, Nicole (Dan) Steele) Jamie Berry and Steven Hackett, great grandchildren, Kenneth Stevens, Wesley Steele and Jaden Steele, sister in law, Ona Reynolds of Wellsville, brothers in law, Gilbert Hackett of Virginia and Walter Hackett of Bath, several nieces and nephews and very dear friends, Ruth Coon and Beverly Hamilton. She was preceded in death by her brother, Doug Reynolds. The family will receive friends on Monday, May 19 from noon to 2 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. A memorial service will follow there at 2 pm with Rev. Brian Diffenbacher officiating. Burial will be in Woodhull Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Assoc. or a charity of one's choice.
