Obituary of Carrie Wallace

GREENWOOD: Carrie Wallace, 98, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday (July 30, 2014) at St. James Mercy Hospital following a brief illness. She had been a resident of Hornell Gardens for the past eight years. Carrie was born in Jasper on February 10, 1916 and was one of 12 children and the last surviving child of Erwin and Grace (Banks) Holt. On March 27, 1936, in Greenwood, she married Raymond C. Wallace to whom she was married to for 64 years. Together they owned and operated a dairy farm in Rexville for several years. Raymond predeceased her January 29, 2000. Carrie was also predeceased by five brothers, Merrill, Clayton, Homer, Wallace and Howard Holt and six sisters; Louise Taft, Nellie O'Dell, Olive Saxton, Ellen Roosa, Abbey Whitford and Madeline Heater. Carrie was a home maker and life long resident of Greenwood where she dedicated her life to being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her greatest pleasures in life were spending time with her family, baking, canning, attending church and working on the farm. All who visited her when she was living in her own home were loved and fed. Her biggest delight was to serve family and friends a delicious slice of her "famous" homemade pie. She was a member of the Greenwood Methodist Church Survivors include: one son: Donald (Penny) Wallace of Harrisburg, Pa. three daughters: Patricia (Bryan) Higgins of Greenwood, Donna (Dana) Lewis of Canisteo and Cindy (Brian) Bentley of Odessa. She is also survived by two sisters -in-law; Edith Wallace of Andover and Ida Holt of Batavia, 8 grand children, 13 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to calling hours from 5-8 PM Friday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo, where a celebration of a life well lived will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Greenwood, N.Y. The family wants to give special thanks to Sophie Ingersoll and Vicki Burns from the Hornell Gardens and her good friend Josie Campenella. Carrie cherished their friendship and love.
