Obituary of Lewis L. Nye

JASPER: Lewis L. "Larry" Nye, 73, of Ste. Rte. 417 passed away unexpectedly Thursday (Feb. 26, 2015) at his home in Jasper. Larry was born October 27, 1941 in Wellsville to Claude and Helen (Smith) Nye. On March 31, 1967, in Wellsboro, Pa. he married the former Nancy Coolidge who predeceased him in October of 2004. In addition to his parents and wife he was also predeceased by infant triplets: Stephen, Linda and Barbara Nye, two brothers: Earl and Albert Nye and son-in-law Carl Mills. Larry was a graduate of Wellsville Central School and was a self-employed excavator for many years throughout the Jasper area and Canisteo Valley. He was best known for being contracted by many area cemeteries to provide the means for opening and closing of burial graves and was very respectful, conscientious and meticulous of his work for the families served. He was a former member and past chief of the Jasper Vol. Fire Dept., a former member of the Jasper Town Board and was a certified member of the Steuben County Office of Emergency Management. Larry was a loving, caring, generous father, grandfather and friend who was always welcome and willing to lend a helping hand. Survivors include three daughters: Deborah (Keith) Wilson of Conway, S.C., Michelle Mills of Jasper and Victoria Nye (Edward Tracey) of Trumbull, Conn. His 7 grand children: Heidi (Shawn) Roberts, Ben Wilson, Angela (Greg) Greene, Heather Mills, Cory (Jennifer) Mills, Jacob (Holly) Borden and Andrea Mills, as well as 15 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his dear friend and companion: Elsie Houghtaling of Jasper. The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-8 pm Monday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. funeral Home, 1607 Main St. in Woodhull, where funeral and committal services will take place immediately following calling hrs. at 8:00 pm with the Rev. Donald Maynard officiating. Burial will be in the Jasper Cemetery, Jasper, N.Y. Memorial contributions in Larry Nye's name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
