Obituary of Elizabeth J. McPherson

CANISTEO: Elizabeth J. "Libby" McPherson, 91, of Stephens St. passed away Thursday (July 9, 2015) at Hornell Gardens following a brief illness. Lib was born June 3, 1924 in Canisteo to Robert L. and Gladys (Porter) Dwight. She was married to William F. McPherson who predeceased her in October of 1998. She was also predeceased by a sister Jean Gerhing. Lib was a graduate of CCS class of 1941 and was a 1945 graduate of the Arnot Ogden School of Nursing in Elmira where she received her Register Nursing degree. She was a veteran of the US Army serving our country proudly during WWII and honorably discharged as a 2nd Lieutant She had been employed at St. James Mercy Hospital and Steuben County Mental Health Dept. where she retired from in 1989. Lib was a member of the Kanestio Historical Society, the Canisteo American Legion and was very active member of the Canisteo Alumni Association. Lib is survived by two sons: William McPherson (Stephanie Lecceardone) of Hornell and Duncan (Cynthia Greene) McPherson of Canisteo, four grandchildren: Lorri McPherson-Stage (Robert), Abbey McPherson, Kristin McPherson-Carlin (Robert) and Kevin McPherson (Denae Bertch) and two great grandchildren: Jason and Ellie Carlin. She is also survived by a brother: Robert L. Dwight of Land-O-Lakes, FL. The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-7 PM Sunday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo where funeral and committal services with military honors will take place immediately following calling hrs. at 7 pm. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo at the convenience of the family.
