Josephine M. Lewis, 84, of Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home in Penn Yan, NY, formerly of Troupsburg, NY, entered into rest on Friday, March 9, 2012 at Penn Yan Manor. Born in Hornell, NY on August 2, 1927, Josephine was the daughter of the late Joseph and Maude Reimann White. She was a graduate of Troupsburg Central School. Following high school, Josephine attended Mansfield Teachers College where she received a bachelors degree in education and then received a masters degree from Geneseo State College. On June 19, 1948, Josephine and Lawrence "Si" F. Lewis Jr. were married in Troupsburg. He preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 2001. Her brother, Francis White also predeceased her. Josephine was a home economics teacher for many years, starting her teaching at Greenwood Central School for one year and then became the home economics teacher at Jasper Central School, a position she held for many years. While at Jasper, she acted as student council advisor for several years and had also been the cheerleading coach for a time. Josephine and Si were long time members of the Troupsburg United Methodist Church. Following their retirements they enjoyed spending winters at their home in Florida. Surviving Josephine are her sons and daughters in law, Larry Lewis (Annie Niver) of Penn Yan, Jeff & Lyn Lewis of Annapolis, MD and Michael & Darlene Lewis of Pennsboro, WV, her grandchildren, Gregory (Erin) Lewis, Brian (Ashley) Lewis, Matthew Lewis, Troy (Lorenna) Lewis, Fawn (David) Karciauskas and Devon Lewis, 8 great grandchildren, her sister, Charlotte Kernahan of Houghton, NY, her brother, Wilfred (Anna) White of Greenwood, NY, her sister in law, Beverly White of Hornell and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Sunday, April 15 from 2-4 PM at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 PM with Jerry Kernahan, her nephew, officiating. Burial will be in Young Hickory Cemetery, Troupsburg, NY. Memorials may be made to the Troupsburg United Methodist Church or the Penn Yan Manor Activity Fund, 655 N. Liberty St., Penn Yan, NY 14527.
