Obituary of Max J. Lang

Max J. Lang, 89, of Knoxville, PA and Crescent City, FL, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2015 at Broad Acres Nursing Facility in Wellsboro, PA. Max was born in Baltimore, MD on June 30, 1926, the son of Max M. and Vera (Wier) Lang. He graduated from Allegany High School. Upon completion of high school he enlisted in the US Navy, serving on a mine sweeper in the European Theater of World War II. Following his military service, Max studied at Alfred University where he earned a degree in Agronomy and Forestry. He married the former Mary Croft in 1949. He was a long time employee of the Houghton family in Corning, caring for the grounds of their estate. He later retired from Corning Inc. in 1987. Following retirement, he and Mary wintered in Crescent City and spent summer months in Knoxville. Max was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rexville, as well as St. John the Baptist Church in Crescent City. He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus in Crescent City. He was a talented musician, being accomplished on the harmonica and accordion. Mary preceded Max in death on December 9, 2008. He was also predeceased by his sons, Thomas Lang and Joseph Lang, his brothers, John and Herman Lang and his sister, Maxine Hargis. Surviving are his children, Michael Lang of Addison, Brian and Audrey Lang of Westfield, PA, Ernie and Holly Lang of Hornell and Amy Jayne Lang-Wehnke of Cortland, his grandchildren, Jamie Lang (Nickie), Jennfer (David) Greenfield, Christy (Casey) Lewis, Amber (James) Allington, Andrea Lang, Nicole (Doran) Israel, Alysha Wehnke and Aaron Wehnke, 11 great grandchildren, his sister, Barbara (Bernard) Miller of Zephyrhills, FL and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, December 4 at 1 PM at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. Deacon Robert McCormick will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Austinburg, PA.��
