Obituary of Thurston H. Granger

HOWARD: Thurston H. Granger, Sr. 89, of Cty. Rte. 27, passed away Sunday (Feb. 14, 2016) at the Fred & Harriett Taylor Health Facility in Bath following a short illness. Thurston was born June 15, 1926 in Canisteo to Francis and Lois (Stewart) Granger. On December 24, 1945 in Kanona, he married his sixth grade sweetheart, the former Bessie L. Payne. She predeceased him in April of 2009. He was also predeceased by three sisters, Doris Kirkum, Iva Drake and Mary Canute and two brothers: Clinton and Lee Granger. Thurston was a union carpenter working building and road construction for Carpenter's Union #281 out of Binghamton. In earlier years he had been employed with the former DiNardo Grocery Store in Hornell, Argenteri's Meat Market and the former Elmhurst Dairy. He also drove semi truck for Kraft Foods of Dunkirk. He was a former Boy Scout Leader and board member for Troop 83 of Canisteo and was also a board member for the Thunderbird District of Scouting. He was a member of the Royal Rangers of Assembly of God and had been a Sunday school teacher. Survivors include two sons: Thurston H. Granger, Jr. of Adrian and Clarence (Julie) Granger of Canisteo. two daughters: Marlene (Donald) Guild of Cameron and Sharon Brady of Canisteo. He is also survived by two brothers: Alfred (Vera) Granger of AZ. and Fred Granger of Denver, CO., three sisters: Esther Crane of Bath, Katharine (Robert) Herceg of Arizona City, AZ., and Frances Granger of Painted Post, 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren, 2 great, great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-8 pm, Wednesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo where funeral and committal services will take place at 11:00 am Thursday. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo. Memorial contributions in Thurston Granger's name may be made to either the Canisteo Fire Dept. 35 Main St. Canisteo, N.Y. 14823 or to the Howard Fire Dept. 3622 Cty. Rte. 7, Avoca, N.Y. 14809. ��
