Obituary of Harry J. Dempsey

Harry J. Dempsey Jr., 91, of St. Rte. 417, Addison, formerly of Bath, passed away on Saturday evening, April 14, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Bath. Born in New York City on Aug. 17, 1920, Harry was the son of Harry J. and Jennie L. Hanston Dempsey. He attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Following college, Harry entered the United States Marine Corp. and served during World War II in the Pacific Theater, participating in the battles of Iwo Jima and Peleliu. He left active duty in 1946 and remained in the Marine Corp Reserves, retiring with the rank of Captain. Harry was a sales manager for the Easton Car & Coach Co. in Easton, Pa. When he located to this area, he became a very active member of the Brewer Detachment of the Marine Corp League in Elmira. He also enjoyed gardening. He was preceded in death by his brothers, James W. Dempsey and Raymond J. Dempsey. Surviving are his daughters, Gaye Sagardi of Addison, Dee and husband Steve Legge of North Kingstown, RI and Kyle Dempsey and husband James Coleman of Kresgeville, Pa., grandchildren, John Loehnert, Brittany Coleman, Ginger Everson, Sara Everson and Staci Everson, great grandchildren, Dillon and Jackson Loehnert and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service with full military honors will be conducted on Tuesday, April 24 at 10:00 AM at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, Va. Navy Chaplain Lt. Commander Garry Thornton will officiate.
