Obituary of Betty J. Calkins

Betty J. Calkins, 88, of St. Rte. 417, Woodhull, NY, passed away on Saturday, Aug 6, 2016 at Absolut Care of Three Rivers in Gang Mills, NY. Betty was born in Hornell on Sept. 25, 1927, the daughter of the late Leon and Doris Alegar Prentice. She was a graduate of Jasper Central School. On Nov. 25, 1945, she married Roy E. Calkins in Bath, NY. Roy preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 2011. Betty and Roy operated the Calkins Red & White Store in Woodhull for 10 years. She was the bookkeeper for Roy's lumber and logging business, Calkins' Sawmill. She later operated her own sewing and fabric business from her home known as Betty's Fabric Shop. Betty had belonged to the Woodhull OES Chapter and the Woodhull Grange. She was an early member of the Woodhull Fire Dept. Ambulance Assoc. as it was formed. Besides Roy, Betty was predeceased by her grandchildren, Shawn Calkins, Danny Calkins, Thomas Calkins, Nicholas Calkins, Savannah Calkins, Tracy Grove and Ashley Kohls, her great great grandson, Richard Gerbes, her daughter in law, Nina Calkins, her son in law, Colon Thompson, her sisters, Marilyn Austin and Janet Halsey and her step brother, Dick Raish. Surviving are her sons, Danny (Janey) Calkins of Fayetteville, NC, Lanny (Mary) Calkins of Jasper, David Calkins of Woodhull, Garry (Pat) Calkins of Woodhull and Kerry (Bridget) Calkins of Troupsburg, her daughters, Cevel Thompson (Larry Enderle) of Corning and Colene (Daniel) Hulbert of Arkport, 34 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, 14 great great grandchildren, her sisters, Dorothy (Robert) Streeter of Greenwood and Bonnie (Robert) Studer of Greenwood and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016 from 12 noon to 1 pm at the Woodhull Cemetery Chapel on the grounds of Woodhull Cemetery. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm with Rev. Brian Diffenbacher officiating. Burial will be in Woodhull Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Woodhull Fire Department or Ambulance Assoc.��
