Obituary of Hugh James Price
Please share a memory of Hugh to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Hugh James Price, 74, of Corning Center for Rehabilitation in Corning, died there on Thursday, November 3, 2016. Hugh was born in North Hornell, NY on April 18, 1942, the son of the late Merritt Russell and Mattie L. Murphy Price. To say the least, Hugh lived a very interesting and diverse life. He left home in 1958 when he was 16. He "fudged" his age to enlist in the US Air Force, married the love of his life, Jan, in 1962 and together they raised 3 great children, Hughie, Sherri and Kati. Hugh's faith was strong and he always had an appropriate Bible verse at the ready to prove a point, especially, it seemed, for his baby sister if he felt she needed chastening. He worked at the Honolulu International Airport and on fishing boats in Alaska; was a welder, a mechanic, a carpenter, an electrician... and so much more. He was a gifted and prolific writer, penning home letters postmarked Costa Rica, Germany, Puerto Rico, Mexico and all 50 states, telling of people he met and the sights he saw, always closing with, Love, Your Son, Hughie. He was much loved and will be sorely missed. Surviving are his children and their spouses, Hugh and Veronica Price Jr. of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Sherry and Trey Childress of Murfreesboro, TN and Kati and Peter Pantoja of Lynn Haven, FL, grandchildren, Ashley (Jason) Tignor, Joshua Teeters, Kristen (Ben) Yeargan and Kassandra Pantoja, sisters, Judy (Dale) Hammond of Fort Pierce, FL and Joanie Price of Coopers Plains, sister in law, Deanna Price of Woodhull, his former wife, Janice Price of Highland, CA and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Merritt Russell Price Jr., David Robert Price, Donald Newell Price and Andrew D. Price, his sister, Jeannie M. Price and his nieces, Tammy Eldridge and Alicia Spitulnik. The family will be present to receive friends on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 10 AM at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM with Hugh's nephew, Rev. Trevor Price officiating. Burial will follow in Jasper Cemetery.
