Randall E. "Randy" Whiteman, 95, of County Route 123, Jasper, died on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA following an auto accident that morning. Randy was born in Jasper on January 11, 1921, the son of the late Charles and Ella Woodard Whiteman. Raised in Jasper, he was a graduate of Jasper Central School. Randy enlisted and proudly served in the US Navy during World War II. He fought in the North African and Pacific Theaters of the war including the campaigns of North African Occupation, Sicilian Occupation, Gilbert Islands Operation, Marshall Islands Operations, Saipan and Tinian Occupation, Leyte Landings and Lingayen Gulf Landing. Randy was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in January 1945. Following his military service he relocated to Horseheads where he became employed by the Horseheads School District where he worked many years as a bus mechanic. He had returned to make his home in Jasper in the last few years. Throughout his adult life, Randy was an avid collector and refurbished of antiques. He loved chiming clocks which would fill his home with various chime tones every hour, which was a slight irritation to his granddaughter during her visits. Randy loved to fish and he and his family spent many joyful days together fishing the Finger Lakes and on trips to Canada Randy loved music and enjoyed playing the guitar and dancing. He also wrote poetry in his own personal style. He was a member of the Addison and Jasper Senior Citizen Groups as well as the Canisteo American Legion Post. Randy was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Joanne Pealer in 1992, his brother, Andrew Whiteman and his sisters, Rachael Cook, Leona Kilmer and Ruth Whiteman. Surviving is his long time companion and dear friend, Winifred "Teddy" Rice of Addison, his son in law and his wife, Richard and Janice Pealer of Horseheads, his grandchildren, Michael (Carla) Pealer, Michele Pealer and Marie (Jim) Loewke, 7 great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews including nieces, Dr. Sally Kilmer and Ella Butcher and nephew, Charles (Nancy) Whiteman. Randy also leaves behind his extended Lewis family around Jasper. Friends may call on Monday, December 5, 2016 from noon to 2 PM at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. Funeral services will follow there at 2 PM with Rev. David Barnard officiating. Burial will follow in Jasper Cemetery.
