Obituary of Michael P. McMindes

Michael P. McMindes, 65, of Taylor St. passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at the Hart Comfort House in Wellsville after a courageous battle with cancer. Mike was born June 8, 1951 in Hornell to Paul and Nancy (Stocum) McMindes. On February 24, 1973 in Canisteo he married Susanne Nilson who predeceased him in 2013. He was also predeceased by an infant son: Richard Paul McMindes, his father Paul McMindes and a sister Wanda Sue McMindes. Mike was a graduate of Canisteo Central School class of 1970 and a graduate of Bryant and Stratton Business School where he received and Associates degree in business. He proudly served in the U. S. Army Reserves from 1982-91. Mike had been employed for several years at the Walmart Store in Hornell where he was a clerk and stock manager, and had at one time worked the "night shift" at the Canisteo Uni-Mart. Mike was a member of the First Baptist Church in Canisteo, a former member of the Canisteo Fire Dept. and a member of the Canisteo American Legion. He was elected and served three terms, six years, on the Canisteo Town Board. Mike's many interests included playing a good round of golf, watching NASCAR racing (favoring the Jimmie Johnson race team) and cheering the Green Bay Packers NFL football team. He also like collecting anything pertaining to wolves and as a hobby did mosaic tile art. Mike is survived by two sons: Matthew (Sabrina) McMindes and Michael McMindes all of Canisteo, two wonderful grandsons: Trent and Nathan McMindes. Mike is also survived by his mother Nancy McMindes of Canisteo, three brothers: Mark McMindes and John (Sandy) McMindes of Canisteo and Jeff (Janice) McMindes of Avon, as well as several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 pm Saturday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo. Funeral and committal services will take place Sunday at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church, Greenwood St. in Canisteo with the Rev. James Patton officiating.
