Obituary of Vera J. Murphy

CANISTEO: Vera J. Murphy, 86, of Ste. Rte. 36 died Tuesday (July 4, 2017) at her home surrounded by the love, comfort and care of her family.

Vera was born in Hornell on April 13, 1931, the daughter of the late Lyle and Cora Heckman. She lived most of her youth in Greenwood, until marrying Andrew D. Murphy of Jasper on August 27, 1951.  Together they raised 5 children in the Canisteo valley.

Vera was a homemaker and care giver who loved caring for her family. She enjoyed time with her 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren – to whom she was known as “Gammy”. They will always enjoy wonderful memories of July 4th celebrations, and other holiday gatherings at her farm. She would cook and bake for all these gatherings – especially her famous baked beans. And, Gammy was also present at many of their baptisms, sporting events, dance recitals, concerts, graduations and weddings. Her passion for her family will always be remembered and honored.

Vera enjoyed her small farm with her garden, flowers and bird feeders.

Vera was predeceased by her parents Lyle and Cora Heckman, and her husband, Denny, of 60 years. Also, her sister Neva Kear; her niece, Sherry Kear and nephews, Tommy and Jeffrey Kear. Her grandsons, Frank Hornbeck and Zach Smith also predeceased her.

Vera is survived by her children Cyndi (Mike) Hornbeck of Hornell, Terry (Barb) Murphy of Canisteo, Kathy (Andy) Williams of Hickory, NC, Andy (Lynette) Murphy of Canisteo, and Andrea (Mike) Deebs of Hornell. Her brother, Harold Heckman of Bath and sister, Loretta (Raymond) Doty of Portville, along with many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from noon to 3pm Sunday, July 9, at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo where a funeral service will take place immediately following calling hours at 3pm. Burial will be in Jasper Cemetery, Jasper, NY.
