Obituary of Reed H. Andrews

Please share a memory of Reed H. to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Reed H. Andrews, 89, of Ordway Lane passed away Saturday morning (July 15, 2017) at St. James Mercy Hospital following an extended illness.

Reed was born May 11, 1928 in North Hornell to the late George and Ariel (Hazzard) Andrews. On May 16, 1953 in the Hornell Baptist Church, he married the former Charlotte Stewart who survives and resides in Canisteo. Reed was predeceased by a brother Robert “Bob” Andrews.

Reed was employed and retired from Steuben Trust Company in Hornell. After high school graduation, he attended Hamilton College prior to enlisting in the service. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army proudly serving our country during the Korean War from 1950-52.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Canisteo where he was very active in church functions and administrative decisions, and was an adult Sunday School instructor for 30 years and had also ministered occasionally Sunday mornings. For 10 years, Reed and Charlotte hosted fresh air children for whole summers at a time and at Christmas time. Hosting these children during those years meant a great deal to him.

Reed loved sports of all nature and enjoyed playing golf. He also coached and refereed for several years, and in his earlier years participated on a debating team.

In addition to his wife Charlotte, to who he was married 64 years, Reed is survived by a sister-in-law Jacky Andrews of Hornell, his God child Johanna Woodams and several nieces and nephews, to include Robert (Kim) Andrews of Montana, Beth (Russell) Gills of Virginia Beach, Susan (Stanley) Hooker of Hornell and Richard (Lisa) Andrews of Hornell.

A special thanks, would like to be acknowledged to nieces Suzie Askins, Julie Karns and Hannah Davis for all of their help at this difficult time of our family’s lost.

At Reed’s request, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will take place Saturday July 29th, at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Canisteo. Full burial will be in Bennetts Creek Cemetery in the town of Greenwood.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to either the First Presbyterian Church, 10 South Main St. Canisteo, NY 14823, Faith in Action, P.O. Box 117 Hornell, NY 14843 or to the Kanisteo Historical Society, 23 Main St. Canisteo, NY 14823.
