Obituary of Oscar W. Kent
Jasper, NY | Oscar W. Kent, 92, of Wade Hill Road, Jasper, entered into rest at home on Monday, October 2, 2017.
Oscar was born in Jasper on June 17, 1925, the son of Rodney and Catherine McCaig Kent. Raised in Jasper, he was a 1943 graduate of Jasper Central School.
On Nov. 8, 1947, he and the former Arlouine L. Simons were married in Canisteo. They operated their family farm together in Jasper. Arlouine preceded Oscar in death on Mar. 7, 2016.
As a young man, Oscar worked briefly on the Erie Railroad as well as at Corning Glass Works. He also was employed by A.L. Blades & Son during the time of the road reconstruction on Route 36 over the Auger Hole in Jasper. He and Arlouine owned and operated his dairy farm in Jasper for many years until his son Jim took over the operation of the farm.
Oscar also sold seed and fertilizer as well as farm minerals to area farms. He was a Board member of the Addison Milk Co-Op. He served on church boards at Jasper and West Jasper churches. He was a lifelong Republican Committee member, honorary member of the Jasper FFA Chapter and was a member of the Jasper Grange.
Oscar is survived by his children and their spouses, James and Valerie Kent of Jasper, Diana and Tom Baker of Xenia, OH and Stanley Kent of Hornell, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, his brother, Laurence Kent of Jasper and many extended family and friends.
Besides his wife Arlouine, Oscar was predeceased by his parents, and his infant brother Arthur.
Friends may call on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 11 am to 1 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. Funeral services will follow there at 1 pm where Oscar’s son Stan will officiate.
Burial will follow in Woodhull Cemetery.
