Obituary of Jean N. Young
CANISTEO: Jean N. Young, 93, of Maple St. passed away Thursday evening October 19, 2017 at Highland Hospital in Rochester after a brief illness.
Jean was born November 30, 1923 in the village of Canisteo. She was the daughter of the late Leslie and Lela (Page) Norton. On April 26, 1942 in Canisteo she married William B. Young and enjoyed 73 years of marriage prior to Bill's death in February of 2016. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Kathleen " Kay" Caward and Dian Stephens.
Jean was a life-long resident of Canisteo where she graduated from the former Canisteo Academy. Shortly after graduation she attended the Bailey School of Cosmetology in Elmira, but turned her career to cafeteria manager for 23 years at the Canisteo Elementary School, retiring in 1987. She was an avid reader and also loved singing, knitting and baking for her family and friends. She was a member of the Wimodaughsian Free Library in Canisteo and a member of the Sweet Adelines in Hornell.
Jean was known for her sweet nature and winning smile. She loved spending time with her family and her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed many fun filled summers at Demons Pond in the cottage her father built.
Survivors include a son Robert (Carol) Young of Canisteo, two daughters, Sharon (Michael) Zielinski of Scranton, Pa. and Elizabeth "Betsy" Peters of Hornell. 9 wonderful grandchildren, William (Kathy) Zielinski, Beth Garibaldi, James (Jeanine) Zielinski, Susan (Daniel) Snopek, Jeffrey (Heidi) Young, Rebecca Gleason, Brett (Holly) Young, David (Danielle) Peters and Michelle (Joseph) Lyons, 18 great grandchildren. Jean is also survived by a sister, Marilyn Fish of Penn Yan and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday, October 28 at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main Street in Canisteo, where a memorial service will take place immediately following calling hours at 1:00 pm. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
