Obituary of William Elwood Rude
Woodhull, NY | William Elwood Rude, 87, of Mill St. Woodhull, NY, passed away at home on Sunday morning, August 5, 2018 with his loving wife at his side.
Bill, who was also called Elwood by some, lived most of his life in Woodhull. He was born in Troupsburg on May 10, 1931 to the late Harold and Clara Horton Rude.
Bill left school at 17 and was hired by Corning Glass Works. At 18 he left there to serve his country. He served two years in the US Army. Following his discharge from the Army, Bill returned to Corning Glass. He worked as a glass mechanic and retired in 1992 with over 40 years of active employment. Following his retirement from Corning, he drove school bus until 2001 for the Addison School District. Bill was a very hard worker, putting in long hours to take care of his family and save for his future.
Bill and the former Clara Crans were married on Feb. 21, 1953. They raised their family together in Woodhull. Clara preceded Bill in death on Feb. 20, 2001. He later married Carla Phillips on Aug. 4, 2001.
Bill was an avid lifelong motorcyclist, riding well into his 80’s, an activity that he and Carla both enjoyed. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking and building and spending time puttering around his farm.
Surviving is his wife, Carla Rude at home, his children and their spouses, William and Tina Rude of Campbell, Diane and Floyd Sharp of Canisteo, Cindy Loban of Addison and Tom and Doris Rude of Elmira, his step children and their spouses, Beth Warren of Painted Post, Bradley Tucker of Addison, Brandy and Grant Sherman of North Dakota, William and Karen Tucker of Campbell and Paula Hadlock and Greg Heigel of Woodhull, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, his siblings and spouses, Robert and Edie Rude of Palmyra, NY and Thelma and Jack Neff of Weeki Wachee, FL, sister in law, Jill Rude of Ashland, Al., brother in law, William Cody of Corning, his aunt, Ethel Wood of Campbell, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides Bill’s first wife Clara, he was also preceded in death by his son in law, Richard Loban, his step daughter, Barbara Freligh, his sister, Arloween Cody, his brothers, Harold Jr., Hiram and Russell Rude and his sister in law, Betty.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 1 pm at the Woodhull Cemetery. Rev. Brian Diffenbacher will officiate.
Bill's family would like to express their sincere thanks to Care First and personel care givers, Paula, Vicki, Karen, Victoria and Jen for the wonderful care provided to Bill during his illness.
A gathering and meal for family and friends will follow the services at the Woodhull Fire Department, W. Main St. Woodhull, NY. A dish to pass would be welcome.
