Obituary of Richard L. DeVore
CAMERON: Richard L. "Dick" DeVore, 78, of the Upper Swale Rd. went home to be with Jesus, his Lord and Savior, Thursday morning, December 27, 2018 at Guthrie Corning Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.
Dick was born March 26, 1940 in Hornell to the late Kenneth and Beatrice (Guild) DeVore, On September 29, 1963, in Hornell, he married the former Diann M. Graves, who survives and resides in Cameron.
Dick was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving our country from 1957-61 and continued his service through the Naval Reserves until 1993. He was a machinist/tool & die maker, for the former Foster Wheeler Company of Dansville for 25 years. Upon the plants closure he continued working for the Alstom Company in Hornell until his retirement.
He was a member of the West Jasper Wesleyan Church where he served on the Administrative Board of Directors as well as the Board of Trustees. Dick was a very proficient singer and for many years enjoyed sing with the piano/organ accompaniment of the late Ursel Craig.
Dick was also very knowledgeable and proficient at carpentry and woodworking, building his own home and crafting many woodworking projects to sell and/or give to his family.
Dick was a very devoted Christian man who always had a pleasant smile, a firm, friendly hand shake and who was willing to help those in need, as evident in the foster care he and his wife gave to many children for better than 35 years.
In addition to his wife, of fifty-five years, Diann, Dick is survived by daughters Anita Evans of Painted Post, Linda (John) Andrade of Williamsport, Pa. and Sierra (Barry) Barcumb of Hornell, sons, Robert (Leah) DeVore of Calif., Dale and Phillip DeVore of Cameron. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren a sister Roslind (Jack) Curtis of Orlando, Fl. and a sister-in-law, Marie DeVore of Windsor. Dick was predeceased by a son Charles "Charlie" DeVore and a brother Roger DeVore.
There will be no prior calling hours. A memorial service followed by military honors, will take place Sunday, December 30th at 3:00 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo with Pastor Stanley Kent officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
