Obituary of Robert E. Palmiter
Robert E. Palmiter, 80, of Hunter Hill Road, Jasper, NY, passed away on Monday night, January 21, 2019 at Elderwood at Hornell in North Hornell, NY.
Bob was born in Hornell on April 14, 1938, the son of the late Lester P. and Dorothy Lonsberry Palmiter. He was a 1957 graduate of Jasper Central School.
On May 17, 1958, Bob and the former Margaret “Peggy” Brabant were married in Jasper.
Bob studied funeral science at Simmons School of Mortuary Science in Syracuse. After receiving his New York State Funeral Directors License, he became affiliated with the Ackerson Funeral Home in Addison, working alongside owner Stanley Ackerson.
Bob moved his growing family to Jasper in 1972 to help his father-in-law, James L. Brabant, manage the operations of his water well drilling business. He became the owner of Brabant Well Drilling in 1980 and retired the business in 2009.
He took great pride in his family, home, church and community. He was a small business owner, a member of the United Church of Jasper and the Jasper Old Home Day (JOHD) Committee for many years. Bob was passionate about cycling, competing in the 80’s and 90’s and could be found biking in his late 70’s. For many years he organized the popular JOHD bicycle races.
Surviving Bob is his wife of 60 years, Peggy Palmiter of Jasper, his children and their spouses, James and Shelia Palmiter of Jasper, Jill and Darrin VanOrsdale of Jasper, Michael and Leta Palmiter of Meridian, MS and Michelle and Roland Button of Jasper, 11 grandchildren, his sisters, Nancy Lee (Noel) Blankenship of Kent, Ohio and Darlene (John) Palmiter-Woodruff of Tampa, FL along with several nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy in 1988 and his father Lester in 2000, his granddaughter, Jessica Nosar in 1989, his brother, Elson Palmiter in 1989 and his son in law, Alan Nosar in 2003.
Friends may call on Saturday, January 26 at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY from 10 am to noon and again from 2 to 4 pm. Funeral services will follow there at 4 pm with Pastor David Barnard officiating.
Burial will be in Jasper Cemetery.
