CANISTEO: Esther A. Holmes, 86, of Cty, Rte. 29 passed away Friday (July 27, 2012) at her home surrounded with the love and care of her family, following a short illness. Esther was born November 30, 1925 in Susquehanna, Pa. to Albert R. and Elizabeth J. (Lamb) Blackington. On March 23, 1946 in Susquehanna, she married William I. Holmes who predeceased her in June of 2000. She was also predeceased by four brothers: John, Gerald, Willard and Paul Blackington and one sister: Pauline Kenyon/Weiss. Esther was a graduate of Susquehanna High School class of 1944. She was a devoted housewife, mother and grandmother who loved and enjoyed her time spent with her grand children and great grand children. She worked as a typist for the W. H. Greenhow Co. (Hornell Evening Tribune) of Hornell from 1965 to 1970. She was a social member of the Canisteo American Legion and a member of the Canisteo Legion Auxiliary where she served as President three different times and was a former member of the Hornell Eastern Star. Esther loved her vegetable garden and canned most everything she grew. She also enjoyed crocheting for her family. Survivors include: three sons: Gary (Kathleen) Holmes of Arkport, Stanley (Angela) Holmes of Walterboro, S.C. and William Holmes of Hornell, two daughters: Diane (Patrick) Mullen of Hartsville and Shirley (David) Popoli of Homer. 15 Grand children, 19 great grand children and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 PM Tuesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo where funeral and committal service will take place Wednesday at 11:00 AM with the Rev. James Saunders officiating. Burial will be in Bath National Cemetery, Bath, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to Steuben Rural Ministries, West Main St. Canisteo, N.Y. 14823.
