Obituary of Shirley E. Marlatt
CANISTEO: Shirley E. Marlatt, 78, of Third St. passed away peacefully at home Sunday afternoon (June 9, 2019) following a brief illness.
Shirley was born July 30, 1940 in Rathbone to the late William and Evelyn (Horton) Houghtaling. On December 24, 1973, in Adrian, she married Charles O. Marlatt who survives and resides in Canisteo.
Shirley had worked and retired from St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, as a Secretary aide in the Mental Health Dept. Prior to working at St. James, she had worked for the former Loohn’s Cleaners in Hornell for many years.
Shirley enjoyed vacationing and shopping. One of her many interests involved collecting anything that involved “wolves” as a theme and enjoyed painting ceramics. Her main enjoyment was her family. She cherished the time spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children: Willard (Jody) Cole of Canisteo, Sherry (Porfirio “Dave” Vasquez) Osmin of Canisteo, Patricia (David) Owen of Woodhull, Cathy Alger (Jeff Witt) of Greenwood, Elwin Marlatt (Denise Curry) of Canisteo and Michael Fox of AZ. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Edward Black of Coudersport, Pa. as well as several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Shirley was predeceased by grandsons: Nicholas Osmin, Richard Trumbul and Earle Houghtaling, III, a sister Darla Black and son-in-law, Earle Houghtaling, Jr.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-8 pm Saturday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo, where funeral and committal services will take place immediately following calling hours at 8:00 pm.
