Charles L. "Charlie" Converse, 83, of Hill Street, Hornell, passed away Sunday evening (October 9, 2011) at home surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Charlie was born September 12, 1928 in Delaware, Ohio. He was the last remaining child of 13 children born to George and Estella (Mosher) Converse. On April 15, 1951 in Aberdeen, Md, he married Lydia J. Herbert who predeceased him in January of 2005. He was also predeceased by a son Richard "Ricky" Converse in April of 2006. Charlie was a veteran of the US Army serving from 1950 to 1956. He was a former cement truck driver in Ohio, janitor at the former Harvey & Carey Drugstore in Hornell as well as a dockhand at the Canada Dry Warehouse in Hornell. He was a member of the Canisteo American Legion and the Hornell Eagles Club. Survivors include his son Charles (Shirley) Converse of Hornell, five daughters, Allie Robinson Esther (David) Hurlburt and Beverly Mead of Hornell, Anna (Wayne) Hoskins of Canaseraga and Karen Rice of Hornell. He is also survived by 32 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter. The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 PM Wednesday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo, where funeral and committal services with military honors will take place at the conclusion of calling hours at 2 PM. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo.
