HORNELL: Sarah E. “Sally” Hatter, 89, formerly of Church Street, passed away Thursday, January 30, 2020 at Elderwood Care facility.
Sarah was born on December 7, 1930 in the town of Jasper to the late Ross and Stella (Woodard) Taft. On May 1, 1948 in Canisteo she married Richard R. Hatter who predeceased her on February 26, 2003.
Sarah spent many years working at St. James Mercy Hospital in Maternity, where alongside the nuns, she helped bring new life into the world. She transferred into Physical Therapy, where she worked with Mr. Bondi (Richard Bondi) until her retirement.
After retirement, Sarah worked at first as a home health aide, and then landed at the North Hornell School as a “lunch lady”. She loved seeing the little kids and took very seriously her job of feeding them.
Sarah loved her gardens at their East Main Street home, and every year she would wait for the splash of color that would bloom every Memorial Day.
Sarah always saw the best in everyone, and made the best of every situation.
Sarah is survived by her daughters, Darlene Schmidt of Jacksonville, FL and Diane Dale of Hornell; and her sons, Kevin (Kathy) Hatter of Fulton and John (Tonia) Hatter of Boca Raton, FL/China; her grandchildren Nichole (Daniel) Schlund of Jamaica Beach, TX, Sean Hatter of Hornell, Courtney (Andy) Horvat of Elmira, Chris Smith of Waterloo, Taylor Hatter of Hornell and Larry Hatter of Fulton, as well as great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Hatter, her son Larry Hatter, a sister Helen Welch and her brothers Bob and Sumner Taft.
There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to either the Hornell AmVets, Faith in Action or a charity of choice.
