NORTH HORNELL/ALFRED STATION: Arthur A. “Art” Horton, 90, formerly of East Valley Rd. in Alfred Station passed away peacefully Saturday morning, March 4, 2023 at Elderwood at Hornell where he had resided since 2019.
Art was born on October 31, 1932 in Hornell to the late Alanson and Ervilla (Aldrich) Horton.
He served in the Army during the Korean War, driving Amphibious tanks, and received the Korean Service Medal with one bronze star, the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation. After the war he worked as a carpenter for Hollands Lumber Co. in Hornell, where he specialized in drywall.
He married Phyllis Ethel Rawleigh in June of 1957. They adopted a baby girl in May of 1963, Kelly Ann is their only child. After a spinal surgery that left him paralyzed, Art took up crafts, he loved working with his hands. He started off with hook rugs, then on to paintings and eventually started carving wood into beautiful pieces of art. His work was even displayed in the Corning Museum of Art. As his hands weekend, he made clay animals and such. The last few years he resided at Elderwood in Hornell where he was making wooden Bi-planes, model houses and even a cardboard dump truck.
Art was a bubbly person who loved to share his “stories”. Hopefully he won’t be too critical of Jesus when they discuss carpentry. He will be dearly missed here on earth.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Horton of North Hornell, daughter Kelly Ann Roberts of Alfred Station, 2 grandchildren Curtis (Lek Sudarat) Roberts of SC and Jeremy Roberts of Alfred, 4 great-grandchildren Leo, Natalie, Ethan and Colton.
Art was predeceased by four sisters, Margarite Kubarek, Theda May, Wanda Dungan and Jane Evans and a brother Alanson Horton.
A celebration of life will take place at 1:00 pm on Sunday, May 28th at Art's home at 5410 East Valley in Alfred Station.
