Obituary of Richard Spencer Ferguson Jr.

Richard Spencer Ferguson Jr., “Spencer”, age 83, of Cameron Mills, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 27, 2023 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. Spencer was born in Bath, NY on June 23, 1940, the son of the late Richard Spencer and Dora Inez (Leach) Ferguson. Raised in Cameron Mills, he was a graduate of Addison Central School. Spencer enlisted in the US Navy soon after high school, serving from 1960 to 1965. He worked for a short time for Corning Glass Works, but eventually began his life work in the building trades. He was involved in a couple partnerships early on, particularly one shared with Bill Horton known as Ferguson and Horton Construction. They concentrated on sheetrock and painting work. Spencer then struck out on his own, being a self-employed painter and rental owner. On December 31, 1984, Spencer and the former Janie Lynn Bostick were married in Elkland, PA. Spencer was a born again Christian and followed the word of the Lord for the rest of his life on earth. He had been a longtime member of Central Baptist Church in East Corning. Upon his return to Cameron Mills to reside after leaving Addison, he began attending Bucksettlement Baptist Church in Bath which is Pastored by his son Greg. Spencer is survived by his wife Janie of Cameron Mills, their children and spouses, Greg and Wendy Ferguson of Bath, Sherry and Steve Woodward of Addison, Danny and Donna Ferguson of Avoca, Verity and Zach LeFevre of Bulgaria, Anna and Ron Jacobson of Cameron Mills, Andrew Stergion of Midvale, Utah and Peter and Joanna Stergion of Ithaca, 16 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, his brother, Wayne (Joan) Ferguson of Williamson, NY, his sister, Judy (Fred) LaVancher of Tioga, PA and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 2 from 4 to 6 pm at the Bucksettlement Baptist Church, 5349 Bucksettlement Road, Bath. Funeral services will follow there at 6 pm with Pastor Greg Ferguson and longtime friend, Rev. Ronald Aebersold officiating. Burial will be in Town line Cemetery, Cameron Mills. Arrangements are with the H.P. Smith & Son Funeral Home in Woodhull, NY.
