Obituary of Walt Duell

Walter E. Duell, Sr., 82, of Pine St. Woodhull, passed away at home on Thursday, August 8, 2024. Walt was born in the Steuben County Town of West Union on December 11, 1941 to mother Dorthea and father Charles Duell. He grew up in West Union where he was raised by his grandparents. Walt attended Whitesville Central School and after moving to Addison he graduated from Addison Central School. Walt had been employed as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator at Joyce Pipeline Co. in Andover and later as an equipment operator for A L Blades & Sons in Hornell. Following several years at Blades, he began a long relationship with Southern Tier Express in Andover as an over the road truck driver, specializing in oversized loads. Walt was a very talented equipment operator, mechanic, welder and fabricator. He was a 28 year member of the Woodhull Fire Department where he served as truck Captain and Operator for several years. He truly loved the independence of truck driving. Walt also enjoyed fishing and spending special times with his family. Walt was married to the former Gracie Clark who predeceased him on December 14, 2021. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Michael Duell and Chester Duell and his great granddaughter, Sophia Duell. Surviving are Walt’s children and spouses, Walter Jr. “Butch” and Tanny Duell of Corning, Jeff and Bobbi Jo Duell of Woodhull and Joe Duell and Carrie Ribble of Addison, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, sisters, Irene Cavall of Columbia, NC, Charlene Runyan of Elkland, PA and Carlene Duell of Bradford, PA along with many nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Thursday, August 15 from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 pm at the Community Church of Woodhull, 5187 W. Main St. Woodhull, NY. Funeral services will be held there on Friday at 2 pm with Rev. Brian Diffenbacher officiating. Burial will follow in Woodhull Cemetery.
