Obituary of Happy Johnson

G. Elaine “Happy” Johnson, 101, of Cameron Mills, passed away at home on Sunday, December 1, 2024. Happy was born in Cohocton, NY on March 21, 1923 to the late Kenneth A. and Genieva Bouton Pawling. She attended the one room Greenville school as a child. She later attended school in Addison from where she was a graduate of Addison High School. Happy and Ralph F. Johnson were married on April 29, 1942. Ralph preceded her in death on August 7, 2000. Memories of Ralph always brought a smile to Happy’s face, something that she hoped would happen to others when remembering her. She was a homemaker and assisted Ralph with the operation of their family dairy farm until 1969. A lifelong Grange member, Happy belonged to the Neils Creek Juvenile Grange 106 and as an adult belonged to Hedgesville Grange 1392 and Jasper Grange 619 as well as Pomona Grange, New York State Grange and National Grange. She was recognized as a Golden Sheaf member in recognition of fifty years of uninterrupted membership in the Grange. Happy was a lifelong member of the Hedgesville Presbyterian Church as well as belonging to the Woodhull Community Friends Senior Citizens group. She and Ralph enjoyed traveling and in later years, Happy looked forward to her annual trips to Florida to visit her brother. She was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to music. Happy was sincere in staying in touch with family and friends by mail and telephone calls. Happy is survived by her daughters, Anne Murphy of Cameron Mills, Ruth (Harold) Creeley of Painted Post and Irene Bullock of Troupsburg, her grandchildren, Bonita Petti (Emile Vaillancourt), Scott Murphy, Aaron Creeley, April Creeley, Zoren (Shelly) Bullock, Amber (Steve) Lamont, Mitch (Rachel) Bullock, Eben (Kerri) Bullock and Chip (Brittany) Bullock, 19 great grandchildren, her sister-in-law, Alice McConnell and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Ralph and her parents, Happy was preceded in death by her sons-in-law, John Murphy and Glenn Bullock and her brothers, William Pawling and Shirley Pawling. Friends may call on Tuesday, December 10 from 1 to 3 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. A memorial service will follow there at 3 pm with Rev. Brian Diffenbacher officiating. Memorial donations are suggested for either the Woodhull Community Church or Care First Hospice.
