Obituary of Lewis E. Bryant

BATH: Lewis E. "Gene" Bryant, 79, formerly of West Washington St. passed away Wednesday (Jan. 4, 2012) at the Steuben County Health Care Facility where he had resided since 2007. Gene was born July 26, 1932 in Jay, Maine to Vivian and Ruth (Merrill) Bryant. On October 14, 1961 in Parkersburg, West Virginia, he married Thelma Smith who survives and resides in Bath. He was predeceased by a sister June Lade, sister-in-law Ruth Ferrell and a brother-in-law, Don Brady. Gene was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean War from 1953-55. He and his wife had resided in the Rochester area for several years where he worked as a police officer, attaining the rank of sergeant, for the Gates Police Dept. for 23 years from 1962- 1985. After retiring they moved to Rexville in 1985 and again in 2004 to Bath. He was a member of the Keystone Club in the town of Gates and was also a member of the Community of Christ Church in Greenwood. In addition to his wife of 50 years, Thelma Bryant, Gene is survived by a daughter, Nina (James) Warriner of Bath, two sons: Jeffrey Bryant of Hornell and Gregory Bryant (John Jameson) of Louisville, KY. and grand children Amanda, Darrin and Sarah Warriner all of Bath. He is also survived by three brothers: Vivian (Joyce) Bryant of Rochester, Maurice (Mary) Bryant of Independence, MO, and George (Betty) Bryant of California., two sisters: Lydia Brady of Kansas City, MO, and LaFern (martin) Barsch of Independence, MO. brothers-in-law: Dick (Mary) Lade of MO. and Earl (Pauline) Smith of West Virginia, several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 12-2 PM Saturday at the Community of Christ Church in Greenwood where a memorial service will take place immediately following calling hrs. at 2:00 PM. Committal with military honors will be in the Bennetts Creek Cemetery in Greenwood. Memorial contributions in Lewis "Gene" Bryant's name may be made to the Greenwood/Rexville Food Pantry, 936 Saunders Rd., Rexville, N.Y. 14877.
