Please share a memory of Lewis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lewis M. Martin, 70, of County Route 100, Town of Woodhull, entered into eternal rest on Monday morning, June 18, 2012 at home surrounded by the love and care of his beloved family. Lewie was born in Endicott, NY on May 18, 1942. He was the son of Harold and Elva S. Bryan Martin. He grew up on the family farm in Borden and attended Addison schools. On Aug. 17, 1963, he and the former Beverly Davis were married in Borden. They made their home together in Canisteo where they lived for many years. Lewie had several jobs as a young man including working for Corning Inc., Ingersoll-Rand and Foster Wheeler. He found his life's work as a truck driver, starting that career with Keith Paddock & Son in Jasper. He later drove for Covered Wagon in Hornell for several years and had recently retired from Butler Transport Systems in Jasper. While living in Canisteo, Lewie began his long career in the volunteer fire service. He joined the Canisteo Fire Department in August 1965 and served in various offices until in 1984 he became Chief of The Department, a title he held until 1995. Following the death of his mother Elva, Lewie and Bev moved to the family farm in Borden where they have resided since 1995. He immediately joined the Woodhull Fire Department and had been an active member until his death. His experiences and wisdom were a great resource for his newly adopted department. Lewie especially took great pride in his sons' love of the volunteer fire service. In 2005, Lewie was appointed as a Steuben County Deputy Fire Coordinator serving the Woodhull area. He was greatly respected by the departments which he served in that capacity. Lewie was a very avid racing fan and promoter, particularly of Woodhull Raceway where he was a member of the emergency crew and head fan of son Brandon. He also had to be on top of every NASCAR race, whether he was at home or on the road. He loved operating the family farm with his sons.
