Obituary of LaVern J. Sherwood

             Jasper, NY | LaVern J. Sherwood, 77, of Cty. Rte. 123, Jasper, NY, passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA after being suddenly stricken at home on Monday evening.

            Born in Rathbone, NY on December 24, 1940, LaVern was the son of the late Reuben Alton and Edith (Hibbard) Sherwood. As a child he attended the Northrup Hill Rural School. He later attended high school at Addison Central School.

            He retired from A.L. Blades & Sons in Hornell where he worked as a heavy equipment operator. Prior to that, LaVern had worked for E.R. Wolcott in Big Flats and as a young man had been employed by Stearns & Stearns in Hornell as well as a pallet factory in Addison. He was an avid car collector. He was a longtime stock car driver at Woodhull Raceway.

            On November 15, 1969, he and the former Shirley J. Brownell were married in Canisteo.

            Surviving LaVern is his wife of over 48 years, Shirley Sherwood of Jasper, his children, Deanne (Mike) Bagley of Bath, James (Reba) Sherwood of Cameron Mills, Debbie (Robert) Stone of Rathbone and Bonnie Wall of Hornell, 19 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, his brothers, Frederick Sherwood of Hawaii and Leon (Suzanne) Sherwood of Addison and several nieces and nephews, including special niece, Charlene Lurcock and special nephew, George Ashbaugh.

            He was preceded in death by his son Earl J. “Jody” Sherwood on Oct. 13, 2015 and by his brothers, Leroy Sherwood and Eugene Sherwood.

            Friends may call on Saturday, May 19, 2018 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. There will be no formal services.
