Obituary of Sandra A. Rice
Addison, NY | Sandra A. Rice, 78, of Main St. Addison, passed away at home on Sunday, December 30, 2018 surrounded by the love of her family.
Born in Hornell on September 8, 1940, Sandy was the daughter of the late Earl and Margaret (VanDurme) Karns. She was raised in Arkport and was a 1958 graduate of Arkport Central School. Following high school, she attended the Doyle Beauty School in Buffalo.
On January 23, 1960, Sandy and Ralph H. Rice were married in Buffalo. As a young woman, Sandy practiced her trade as a beautician. She eventually left that field and became associated with Pine Valley Motors which was a Honda Recreational Vehicle Dealership.
She then served as the Town of Addison Town Clerk. During the times of her various jobs, Sandy studied at Corning Community College. She finally took a job as a teaching assistant in the special education department at Addison Central School. She retired from the school system with over 20 years of active employment.
She and Ralph were very active square dancers, belonging to several square dance groups in the region. Sandy was a member of the Middletown Historical Society in Addison and had attended the United Methodist Church of Addison.
Surviving Sandy is her husband of nearly 59 years, Ralph Rice of Addison, her sons and daughters in law, Kerry and Sharon Rice of Addison, Keith and Cristeta Rice of Richmond Hill, Ga. and Kurt and Robin Rice, also of Richmond Hill, her grandchildren, Jennifer Rice with Brian Fey, Melanie (Bill) Girouard, Dylan Rice, Dustin Rice and Angela Rice, great grandchildren, Emma, Colby, Madison, Carley and Aiden, sisters, Nancy Fitzmaurice of Leesburg, VA, Peggy Karns (John DuPont) of Hornell and Sue (Bill) Wyant of Seneca Falls, brother, Jim (Linda) Karns of Wellsville, sisters in law, Roma Karns, Audrey Llewellyn and Sue Shorthouse, brother in law, Llewellyn (Patti) Rice and many nieces and nephews.
Sandy was preceded in death by her brother, John Karns and her sisters in law, Elaine Smith and Darlene Ellis.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 4 from 5 to 7 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1607 Main St. Woodhull, NY. A memorial service will follow there at 7 pm with Rev. Mark Flandreau officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested for the Middletown Historical Society.
